Members are the Heartbeat of the 60th Congressional Cup

The Congressional Cup, a premier match racing event and the longest running of its kind in North America, celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2025. Hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club (LBYC), this prestigious regatta has become a cornerstone of the international sailing calendar. While elite sailors vie for the coveted Crimson Blazer, it’s the dedicated member volunteers from LBYC who ensure the event’s enduring success.

A Legacy of Volunteerism

Since its inception in 1965, the Congressional Cup has been distinguished not only by its world-class competition but also by the unwavering support of over 300 volunteers each year. These volunteers, all LBYC members, play pivotal roles in various aspects of the event, from race management to media and public relations.

Behind the Scenes: Volunteers in Action

The spectrum of volunteer roles is vast and integral to the event’s smooth operation:

  • Umpires: Ensuring fair play and safety during races.
  • Pier Hosts and Boat Hostesses: Providing hospitality and support to teams and spectators.
  • ‘Yellow Hats’: A team dedicated to preparing and maintaining the fleet of Catalina 37s, ensuring they are race ready.
  • Housing Hosts: Opening their homes to visiting teams

And much more…

The 60th Anniversary: A Milestone Celebration

Held from April 30 to May 4, 2025, the 60th edition delivered an unforgettable week of match racing. Defending champion Chris Poole attempted to secure his third consecutive title, in a fleet stacked with international sailing talent. Switzerland’s Eric Monnin and his Capvis Swiss Match Racing Team of Ute Monnin Wagner, Mathieu Renault, Jean-Claude Monnin, Simon Brügger, Julien Falxa, and Maxime Mesnil clinched a long-awaited Congressional Cup win and stage three of the 2025 World Match Racing Tour season. Monnin defeated Poole 3-2 in a closely contested final.

The Heart of the Congressional Cup

More than just a regatta, the Congressional Cup is a reflection of the Long Beach community itself: generous, passionate, and deeply connected to the water. As the 60th anniversary concluded, it was clear that the heart of the event wasn’t just in the sails—but in the people behind them.
