RC Boats Make Big Splash

A new fleet has launched at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, and though it may be small, it’s impact among club members is mighty. Radio controlled boat racing debuted off the boardwalk jetty in front of a full restaurant of smiling spectators. The unique event drew a fantastic turnout with all ages joining in for training, racing and enjoying the waterfront location.

Being based on the southern shores of Moreton Bay which covers almost 1,312 square miles of Australia’s Queensland coast, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron boasts close to 4,000 members with a wide range of interests on and off the water. From seasoned sailors to wide-eyed newcomers, the energy was electric as sleek, model Dragonforce 65 radio boats zipped across the water exposing a new and broader audience to the joy of sailing.

With gusty breezes and grins all around, it was clear that this new Friday afternoon event will become a mainstay of the club calendar. Boats are available for rent from RQYS and the activity is open to Members, their guests and visitors to participate until early November when the social championships begin in earnest.
