New Concept for Engaging Members on the Water

Last year, San Francisco Yacht Club’s Membership Engagement Committee launched a new “Pod” concept with the goal of engaging more Members in on-water fun. Like whales, SFYC Pods are mammals travelling in groups in and around the water. The concept is catching on and a fourth Pod was recently launched for Sportfishing enthusiasts, joining the SUP, Open-Water Swimming and RC Sailboats Pods.

Each Pod is tasked with organizing events and activities for Members interested in each sport. In 2024, MEC is encouraging the inclusion of the Pods in events sponsored by a range of committees and collaborating with other interest areas at the Club to further engagement across ages. Their hope is that this will make more events accessible to Members with multiple interests.

Sportfishing Pod holds monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00pm in the Commodore’s Room. This Pod plans to hold several events this year. Collaboration Idea: Would a fishing event add a new dimension of fun for Youth Sailors?

With the weather warming up, the SUP Pod will resume Saturday morning meetups at 9:00am at the Junior Dock. No SUP? No problem! Loaner boards and paddles are available. Watch the Bow Wave for information on spring and fall events co-hosted by the SUP and Open-Water Swimming Pods. Collaboration idea: Would SUPs add another layer of activity to local Cruise events? Grab a loaner SUP and paddle out to the Cove!

When the water gets a bit warmer the Open-Water Swimming Pod has several opportunities to swim each month. All levels are welcome; wetsuits are recommended for beginners. Custom-made red SFYC swim caps are provided. Collaboration Idea: Would a swim in the cove be an added boost to the Memorial Day BBQ?

SFYC has a fleet of six DragonForce 65 radio-controlled sailboats for the Remote-Control Sailboats Pod. The RC Boats are open to all ages and lessons are available. These sailboats offer the same thrills and technical challenges as racing around the Bay. MEC is looking for a new RC Sailboat Chair this year and the Pod will be supported by Adam Corpuz-Lane in the interim. Collaboration Idea: Would RC Sailboats off the Guest Dock add more on-the-water fun on Opening Day?
