Harm Müller-Spreer Aboard Platoon Wins World Championship Title in the TP52 Class by One Point

What a riveting race! NRV member Harm Müller-Spreer secured the 2023 Rolex TP52 World Championship title with a thrilling comeback in the final minutes of the last race off Barcelona.

With an overall lead of two points at the start of the final race, the team overtook two boats from fourth place at the final windward mark of the championship in the final third of the downwind leg, one of which was the then reigning 2022 World Champion Quantum Racing, to finish second in this final race of the World Championship, just behind World Championship title contender Provezza. This was enough to become World Champion by one point!

Harm Müller-Spreer won the World Championship title for the third time after 2017 in Scarlino and 2019 in Puerto Portals.

Accordingly, the Platoon owner and helmsman beamed overjoyed after the regatta:

“This world championship was certainly one of the toughest. It was up and down the whole week and we had to wait two days for wind. On the first day of sailing, we had problems and in the third race there were two red flags, so we ended up ninth. We then had a strong comeback and the performance of the team, and the boat was really very good,” said Müller-Spreer.

Platoon tactician Vasco Vascotto, added with a grin,”I think my dad may have been up there encouraging Terry to go left and me to stay right!” He paid tribute to the entire Platoon crew and especially to Spanish Olympic and America’s Cup sailor Jordi Calafat. “

In the 52 Super Series 2023 season standings, Platoon ranks second. The final regatta is the Puerto Portals 52 Super Series Sailing Week September 18-23, 2023.
