Fifth Royal Cup for American Magic in Galicia
Under clear skies and with the iconic Cíes Islands in the backdrop, the Galicia 52 Super Series Royal Cup came to a spectacular close in the waters of the Rías Baixas. Over five thrilling days of competition, 11 teams from nine nations raced under the flawless organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates.
American Magic Quantum Racing, skippered by Doug DeVos, clinched its fifth Royal Cup title—adding to those won in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2022. Blending the youthful energy of 22-year-old Harry Melges IV with the seasoned experience of Terry Hutchinson, the American crew triumphed through consistency rather than dominance—avoiding major errors and staying ahead when it counted most.
The battle for second and third place delivered intense tactical drama. Germany’s Platoon Aviation, featuring local sailor Víctor Mariño, and Italy’s Alkedo Vitamina, with Galician crew member Pablo Torrado, fought hard until the final race. Both teams finished tied in points, but Platoon edged ahead thanks to back-to-back wins on the last day.
American Magic sealed the championship after the penultimate race, sailing with the composure of a team in control. While others scrambled for podium spots, they maintained strategic discipline, finishing fourth in that race—enough to lock in the overall win with one race remaining.
Meanwhile, Platoon Aviation surged ahead under the helm of Marcus Wieser, returning to the TP52 class alongside tactician Vasco Vascotto and navigator Jules Salter. Their two victories on the final day demonstrated exceptional form and secured second place overall.
“It always hurts not to win at home, but finishing on the podium and improving toward the Worlds was hugely rewarding. Sailing in our Rías is magical, and I’m so proud to represent Vigo, Galicia, and Monte Real” said Víctor Mariño of Platoon.
Alkedo Vitamina, meanwhile, completed a remarkable comeback season after a major setback earlier in the year.
“Beating Platoon was a tall order. They’ve been impressive, especially with Javier de la Gándara’s local insight. After breaking our mast a few months ago, we never imagined being on the podium here. We’re proud of our progress” said Pablo Torrado of Alkedo.
This marks the second time the 52 Super Series visits Baiona—and once again, Galicia delivered. With steady winds, technical waters, and an unmatched natural setting, Rías Baixas offered a spectacular racing venue. Monte Real Club de Yates earned universal praise for its organization, logistics, and Galician hospitality.
“Hosting the 52 Super Series is a privilege. The teams love sailing here and want to come back. The event was a great success once again” stated José Luis Álvarez, President of Monte Real.
The event concluded with an emotional awards ceremony, capped by the presentation of the prestigious Royal Cup, first donated in 1995 by sailing icons including King Harald of Norway. Since 2012, it has been awarded to one of the key events in the TP52 season, and Baiona has firmly secured its place on that calendar. Next stop: Cascais, Portugal, where the fleet will race for the Rolex TP52 World Championship from July 1–6.
