Located in Cascais, Portugal, 20 miles from Lisbon, Clube Naval de Cascais (CNC) was founded in 1938. Since then it has played a major role in the development of water sports in Portugal, namely in sailing.

CNC’s Sailing School was established in 1950 and has been the cradle of hundreds of sailors, with several of them having achieved international recognition in major international events and Olympic Games. CNC is the Portuguese yacht club which has the highest number of sailors who participated at the Olympics and has been present in all editions since 1948, where it won its first medal (Silver). In addition, members of the Club have, over the decades, won several Iberian, European and World titles and numerous podiums.

The waters of Cascais are considered to be one of the world’s best venues for yacht racing, and in 2007 a Center ofHigh Performance was created and is used intensively by the national and foreign sailing teams.

Since 1948, CNC has organized over 100 major international events (Iberian, European and Worlds) with great success and this has contributed positively to the local economy and promotion of Cascais. For this reason, the City Council has been a strong supporter to the Club and co-sponsored many of the events.

The construction of an adjacent marina in 1995 has provided the CNC the possibility to sail throughout the whole year, rather than just a few months due to adverse marine and weather winter conditions. CNC has played an important social role involving youth from diverse social backgrounds through their sailing school, allowing them to get started in yachting. Finally, in 2005, CNC started a Disabled Sailing Department, which provides the opportunity for youngsters with disabilities to sail at no cost.
