Centenarian of the Year 2026: Vigilance of Brixham
Every year since 2007, the Classic Boat Awards have celebrated the world of traditional vessels and the individuals who preserve and sail them, with the support of the Gstaad Yacht Club. In 2026, the awards returned to London, once again highlighting the beauty, craftsmanship, and legacy of some of the world’s finest historic yachts. While a specialist jury refines the field of candidates into shortlist, a public vote helps determine the winners. This unique approach allows classic boat enthusiasts worldwide to take part, strengthening the connection between these vessels and the communities that admire them.
This year’s shortlist represented the very best of classic yachting. Each nominee embodied authenticity, resilience, and timeless elegance, making the final decision particularly compelling. Among them, one vessel stood out, capturing both expert recognition and public admiration.
The winner of the 2026 Classic Boat Award is Vigilance of Brixham, a 78ft Gaff Cutter launched in designed and built by John Upham and launched in 1926. More than an historic vessel, Vigilance of Brixham is a living link to Britain’s maritime past. As one of only seven surviving sailing trawlers built in Brixham, she represents a rare connection to a defining era in the fishing industry. At launch, she reflected the height of trawler design, combining speed, strength and seaworthiness. Her excellence was quickly proven through record-breaking performances and victory in the prestigious George V Cup during Brixham’s annual Trawler Race.
Her journey, however, has not been without challenges. After the Second World War, many similar vessels were scrapped, and she narrowly escaped the same fate. Instead, she entered a new phase of service as both a sail training vessel and an Arctic survey ship, demonstrating her adaptability and durability. In 1997, she was rediscovered on the Isle of Man. Recognizing her significance, a dedicated group of enthusiasts undertook the ambitious task of returning her to Brixham. Their efforts began a careful and lengthy restoration process aimed at preserving her character while ensuring her continued seaworthiness.
Today, Vigilance of Brixham serves as both a floating monument and an active vessel. Through public engagement, educational initiatives, and regular sailing, she keeps maritime traditions alive. Her presence offers a tangible link to the past, allowing new generations to experience the craftsmanship and skills of an earlier seafaring era. Her story is one of resilience and renewal. From early success to near loss, and ultimately rediscovery and restoration, she embodies the enduring value of maritime heritage. Her journey reflects not only the history of a single vessel but also that of a wider industry and community shaped by the sea.
The 2026 Classic Boat Awards once again demonstrated that passion for classic yachts remains strong. The continued enthusiasm of both experts and the public highlights a shared commitment to preserving these vessels and the stories they carry. Through such celebrations, historic boats are not only remembered but actively sustained for future generations.
