40th Prince of Asturias Trophy Champions Crowned

Galicia delivered a spectacular finale for the 40th Prince of Asturias Trophy, jointly organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Spanish Naval Academy, with sponsorship from ABANCA. The prestigious regatta, one of the crown jewels of the Galician sailing calendar, concluded on Sunday, September 7, in the Rías Baixas after fulfilling the race program in five out of seven classes and crowning the new champions of its milestone edition.

Following three fiercely contested days, Aceites Abril, Urbapaz, Deep Blue 2.1, Bonaventure, Saplicco Quinta Lamosa, Solintal, and Sofía Toro’s team in the Gestilar Ladies Cup emerged as the new champions of the Prince of Asturias Trophy.

Aceites Abril shines in ABANCA ORC 1–2
Just as in the first two days, Aceites Abril, skippered by brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal of Real Club Náutico de Vigo, proved untouchable on Sunday. The team clinched two more race wins, closing the series with a dominant scoreline of 1-1-1.5-1-1-1 and just 6.5 points overall. This secured not only their third class victory in the event’s history but also the title of overall ORC champion.

Behind them, the Syone Panther of Nuno Neves (CAVCMA) climbed to second, while Yess Too of Rui Ramada (MRCYB) seized third place after an impressive performance in Cíes.

Urbapaz dominates ACEITES ABRIL ORC 3
In ORC 3, Urbapaz helmed by Fran Edreira (CN Cabanas) capitalized on four consecutive opening wins. Despite easing off with scores of 4 and 3 in the last two races, Urbapaz secured overall victory with 11 points (1-1-1-1-4-3). The podium was completed by Bon III of Víctor Carrión (CNP Lagoa) in second, and Orion of Javi Pérez (MRCYB) in third.

Deep Blue 2.1 secures VANGUARD ORC 4 victory
From an opening tie to a decisive eight-point margin, Deep Blue 2.1, skippered by Vicente Cid (RCN Vigo), left no doubt in ORC 4. With five wins out of six races, the Vigo team claimed the title ahead of Travesío of Álvaro Martínez (RCN Sanxenxo) and Ronáutica Marinas of Anna Carneiro (CN San Telmo).

Bonaventure takes a narrow win in AUTOS LOUZAO OPEN 1
Racing a coastal course between Baiona and the southern Cíes Island, the Open fleet started just after midday in 6–7 knots of southwesterly wind. In Open 1, the day’s race win went to Maika of Miguel Fonseca (Mentor F. da Foz), lifting them to third overall.

Meanwhile, Bonaventure of José Luis Ríos (RCN Vigo), which had taken the lead on Saturday, secured the overall victory by just one point over Maija of Ignacio Alzueta (MRCYB), with Maika completing the podium.

Saplicco Quinta Lamosa seals victory in GADIS OPEN 2
No changes at the top of Open 2: Saplicco Quinta Lamosa of Joao Serodio (YC do Porto) scored another win to claim the title, three points clear of the competition. Boeiro of Luis Wizner (RCN Vigo) finished second, overtaking Esquío of César Castro (LM Bouzas), who settled for third.

Solintal crowned overall J80 Spanish Cup Champion – Etnia Barcelona wins mixed division
The J/80 fleet once again showcased the strength of Spain’s one-design sailing. Seven teams were in contention until the final race, but it was Solintal, skippered by Ignacio Camino (RCM Santander), that rose to the top, discarding an eleventh and finishing with 16 points (2-2-3-2-5-2). Marías of Manuel María Cunha (MRCYB) was second, and Kouko of Daniel Cuevas (RCM Marbella) third.

In addition, the Prince of Asturias Trophy also decided the Mixed Spanish Cup Champion, awarded to Etnia Barcelona of Peru Múgica (RCM Santander), which competed with a balanced crew of three women and three men.

Unstoppable Galicians in the Gestilar Ladies Cup
With a commanding lead going into the final day, Sofía Toro’s team (RCN Coruña) sealed an emphatic win in the Gestilar Ladies Cup, collecting three more bullets on Sunday. Their dominance left them 12 points clear of the fleet. The squad, featuring Olympic champions Sofía Toro and Ángela Pumariega alongside Marta Torres, Carmen Solórzano, Coca Delgado, and Paloma Botas, posted a stellar 3-1-1-1-7-1-1-1 (discarding the seventh). CN Ibiza, led by Maura Ramón, finished second, while RCN Tenerife, helmed by Olympian Alicia Cebrián, took third.

The grand awards ceremony at Monte Real brought a fitting close to this 40th Prince of Asturias Trophy, reaffirming its status as a cornerstone of Spanish sailing.
