NRV Volunteers Dinner – A Token of Appreciation

For one evening on February 24, 2023, everything at the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein‘s (NRV) main dining room revolved around the helpers and volunteers, without whom the NRV simply would not function. Between race officers, flag pullers, timekeepers, mark layers, beach masters, jury members, referees, and coaches, other race officers, committee members, board, shore helpers, and so many more – the volunteers are the pulse of the NRV, without whom there is no racing, no training, no social events, no successes, no club life.

Of 205 invited helpers, 117 attended and enjoyed an exuberant atmosphere among their peers at the NRV. Club Manager and Sports Director Klaus Lahme spoke to the group, thanking everyone for their efforts and a few individuals in particular:

“We have held 17 Alster regattas in 2022. A huge thanks goes to ‘HHH’ – Hans-Herbert Hoffmann, and his team. Hans-Herbert takes care of all documents and even invites the referees.

“Almost always present at all Alster Regattas is Horschi, who has supported us here for decades in his function of referee. And has wife Gitty rocks the Race Office.”

Lahme went on to thank all the other important helpers who volunteered for the regattas at Kiel Week, Travemuende Week and many other occasions hosted by the NRV. And he did not forget to point out the good work of Ulf Gerlach, who not only supports the club regularly as a referee, but also conducts the weekly SV training for inclusive sailing of disabled yachties.

“Last but not least, many thanks go to the helpers’ teams from THW (Technisches HIlfswerk – a technical support organization) – thank you for the safety on the water and when you lay the buoys, it always fits really well.”

Lahme also did not forget to thank his office team and especially the NRV’s Executive Board, plus the many volunteers on the committees: “We’re all turning a huge wheel here together.”

With cold roast beef, home fried potatoes and string beans, this evening turned out to be a long and pleasant get-together, with lots of talk and various plans made for the coming season. A special evening for very special helpers and after all, volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.

Thanks a lot, to all who support the NRV!
