Silver Medal for Tim Fischer and Fabian Graf at the 49er World Championship in Oman

It was a thrilling final at the 49er World Championship in Oman on November 16-21, 2021. Norddeutscher Regatta Verein’s Olympic Team sailor Tim Fischer and coxswain Fabian Graf started the final race with an 8-point lead over the Danish favorite team of Frederick Rask and Jacob Precht Jensen. Equal with two other teams (AUT and POL) they were at the front of the starting line with the following single recall and decided — correctly, as it turns out — to turn around.

From the very back they fought their way boat by boat through the field , hoping to grab the world championship title again. In the end, they had to settle for the still impressive silver medal, only two points behind the Dutch team of Bart Lambriex and Floris van der Werken. The bronze went to the Danes Frederick Rask and Jacob Precht Jensen, who beat Ian Barrows and Hans Henken from the USA by just one point.

This is Tim and Fabian’s second World Championship medal after their World Championship bronze in 2018. For the NRV Olympic Team, it was a great end to a sensationally successful year.

Tim Fischer said, “The silver medal is very cool, but I won’t forget so quickly what an opportunity we had here today. We are working on winning it again on course for the Olympics. In any case, this medal will inspire us.”
