NORDDEUTSCHER REGATTA VEREIN (NRV) in Hamburg is one of the oldest and at the same time one of the largest yacht clubs in Germany. The Club counts around 2,000 members at home and abroad. The NRV`s yacht register lists around 400 yachts owned by members and puts more than 70 club boats at the disposal of its 246 youth members for sailing training. Founded by Hamburg merchants in the year 1868 the NRV clubhouse is located in the Hamburg city centre on the banks of Lake Alster.
By implementing new regatta formats like modern offshore races or spectacular “sailing-in-the-city”-events close to spectator grandstands the club gave important new impulses to the national as well as the international sailing scene. The NRV is co-founder and until today also co-organiser of Kiel Week (since 1882) as well as of Travemuende Week (since 1889).
Amongst the highlights of the recent past are sailing events like: “DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge”, a Trans-Atlantic regatta from Newport, R.I. / USA to Hamburg on occasion of the Centennial of “Hamburgischer Verein Seefahrt” (Hamburg Seafaring Club) in 2003, and “HSH Nordbank Blue Race”, a further Trans-Atlantic regatta that again led a fleet of yachts from Newport, R.I. to Hamburg in 2007. Furthermore the NRV organised and implemented several World-, European- and German Championships in various boat classes such as: Starboat, Dragon, 49er, J24, 420, Laser, Optimist dinghies and Match Racing.
In 2013 a completely new regatta format was introduced to the German yachting scene. For the first time German yacht club teams sailed against each other to determine their master. The competition follows similar rules as those of the German premier soccer league. A total of 18 clubs competed. The NRV won the title in both 2013 as well as in 2014.
A recent addition to the international offshore regatta activities of the Club is the Nord Stream Race sailed annually between St. Petersburg / Russia and German Baltic Sea ports. The 800nm non-stop race is organised and implemented in cooperation with St. Petersburg Yacht Club in Russia.
Being one of the largest German yacht clubs the NRV`s main objective today, apart from maintaining its traditions, is the sailing training of the youth. Special emphasis is put on target oriented promotion of young people. The club regularly recruits new potential talents and actively supports their development into performance-oriented regatta sailors. In the summer time more than 200 kids enjoy weekly sailing training supported by four professional sailing coaches. Additionally, more than 50 kids take part in trial and school sailing courses.
The NRV Olympic Team, founded in the year 2000, supports the preparations of its performance-oriented sailors for the participation in Olympic Games through target oriented and sailing-specific assistance as well as personal team exchanges.
NRV is preparing to celebrate the its 150th Anniversary in 2018 and will do so by hosting a Transatlantic Race.
Incidentally Yacht Club Costa Smeralda – www.yccs.it – of Porto Cervo / SARDINIA – one of our Reciprocal Clubs – will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2017. Therefore, both Clubs have decided to join hands in organizing two outstanding Trans-Atlantic Races in 2017 and 2018.
In November 2017 the YCCS will host the westbound regatta from the Canary Islands to Virgin Gorda, BVI with the finish line in front of their Caribbean Clubhouse.
In July 2018 – supported by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton – www.rbyc.bm – another one of our Reciprocal Clubs – the NRV will host the eastbound regatta from Bermuda to Hamburg / GERMANY.
