yacht club italiano

Genoa, Italy

Yacht Club Italiano was founded in 1879 and is the first and oldest Italian yacht club. The history of the Club, since its inaugural regatta on 8th August 1880, when 177 boats took part, is rich in important events. As well as numerous collaborations and supporting a large number of national and international events, the Yacht Club Italiano organises a number of “classic yacht” meetings every year. In 1881 it organised the first race in the La Spezia’s gulf and, few years later, had its base in Genoa’s harbour on a pontoon.   From the beginning of the last century we started to organize races in Genoa like the famous winter Genoa’s week, and in 1929 built the first clubhouse on the original site.

Until 1936 Yacht Club Italiano was also the national authority for sailing and, in fact, today maintains this role regulating the rules of the yacht clubs around Italy. At the end of the Second World War it was decided to eliminate the title Regio (Royal) given in 1879 by King Umberto I. Today there are 1200 Members from all over Italy, but the majority are from the Genoa area.

In 1952 , with Yacht Club de France, the Giraglia’s Race, the most famous race in the Mediterranean area was inaugurated, and continues today, sponsored by Rolex. There are many other races organised by YCI: Pirelli’s trophy, Portofino Rolex Cup, Siad trophy, Grand Prix d’Italie Mini 6.5 and races for dinghies. Generally, YCI organizes every year a major championship (world or European) for various one design classes.

Yacht Club Italiano enjoys a harbor with 240 berths.  The YCI nautical centre, located on the Duca degli Abruzzi Marina, coordinates personnel and equipment in order to provide its Members with mooring, launching and haulage facilities. These facilities are also available to visiting yachts for periods not exceeding a few days.  In this area there is also the Scuola di Mare Beppe Croce, a structure devoted to sailing school, races, match race academy and school for any activity done on the sea. Here there are simple rooms that can host up to 28 persons for intensive courses or during races.

Yacht Club Italiano also has a summer station in Portofino basically used for races in that area and as a restaurant for members and guests in the evening.

YCI is part of  Fondazione Nave Italia, a foundation that owns and maintains an old brigantine . The aim of the "Fondazione Tender to Nave Italia" is to make a solid and important contribution to the wellbeing of the more vulnerable members of our society: children, adolescents, people with physical, mental and sensorial handicaps, the sick and the aged. For this reason the foundation promotes the sea and navigation as essential training and therapeutic experiences. The ‘Tender’ is a 61 metre sailing ship with berths for up to thirty guests, plus crew: not just a floating hotel, but a centre for education and research projects.

Another important activity is the BMW Match Race Academy, founded with BMW Italy for match race training and activities.
