royal freshwater bay yacht club

Perth, western Australia, Australia

Originally formed in 1896 as the Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, the facilities comprised a modest jetty to accommodate Member’s boats together with a small clubroom but this was to begin a committed process of development in both the amenities and in the sport of sailing for all who would follow this first step taken.

Some 114 years later, after two world wars, endless regattas have been staged and the Club now has a proud history of local, state, national and world championships through to Olympic Gold. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, as it became known upon the granting of its Royal Charter, continues to thrive and prosper while bringing together Club Members and their families at this same picturesque location on the banks of the expansive Swan River, just 6 nautical miles upstream from the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean.

The future of any quality sailing club lies in the development of a younger generation of sailors. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club was the first in Western Australia to establish a fully accredited Sail Training School which has seen over 10,000 participants in its various courses since 1997. This is supported with an up to date fleet of Pacer dinghies as well as Optimists, Lasers, 420s and others.

The Club has an Etchells development fleet to facilitate junior sailors into keel boat classes and the Club utilises a fleet of Bakewell-White designed 8 metre keel boats to supplement its training and competitive programmes. The Club also accommodates one-design keelboat fleets of Dragons and Flying Fifteens along with 4 Divisions of cruiser/racers, predominately competing in the river but from which the very strong fraternity of ocean racers is drawn.

This is all supported by a full time Training Officer and contracted coaches of the highest experience. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club is also the home of the newly established Sailing High Performance Programme in partnership with the Western Australian Institute of Sport, Yachting Western Australia and Yachting Australia.

Since the Club's first official race in 1897, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club has set the pace for many boating classes on the river and maintained its reputation as a centre for sailing excellence. The domination of its sailors at every level of the sport shows that, after 114 years, the competitive spirit of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club is alive and well.

A marina made up of eight fully serviced jetties provides for some 325 boats and numerous Club moorings ensure Members have safe and easy access for the many programmed activities. A separate Dinghy/Junior facility within the Club grounds caters for the wide range of classes active in fleet and teams racing and the large lawn area used for rig-up bordered by the launching beach will be the envy of many Clubs around the world.

Club facilities include an extensive downstairs Members Bar and dining area with panoramic views of the river environs together with a large Ballroom and Galley, Committee Room, Library, Ward Room and administrative offices while upstairs a large function room with extensive outdoor deck area takes full advantage of the elevated views on offer.

Convenient wharf-side fuelling, slipway and shipwright services, hardstand areas and wharf-side cranes are available to meet the needs of boating Members and there is a generous amount of space for Member parking.

While all these attributes make for ample convenience, a Club is more than its facilities alone and Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club takes great care to ensure that its club atmosphere remains strongly welcoming and encouraging to the spirit of camaraderie for which we have always been known.

That approach has now been more fully taken into the international arena via the Club’s early membership of the ICOYC and attendances at all Commodores’ Forums since that time and is pleased to find so many like-minded Clubs willing to share expertise and experiences for the ultimate benefit of our respective members.
