Mission and Vision The Council’s mission is to foster closer relations between selected yacht clubs around the world in order to improve the quality of the yachting and other services they provide to their members. The Council shall also promote a proper awareness of the environment and responsibility towards it. The Council shall operate at the level of Commodores and other present and former Flag Officers of the member clubs. It shall provide an effective platform for the exchange of ideas and experience among this group, and among General Managers. Present Objectives of the Council Membership Commodores’ Forum
The centerpiece of annual activity of the Council is the Commodores’ Forum. The Forum venue is generally rotated between continents and is a prestigious event for the host yacht club. In addition the Council maintains an active e-forum on the website where members of yacht clubs in the Council can discuss a range of current issues and seek advice from peers around the world. Website The Council’s website is becoming the main method of communication between the member clubs, and it also provides a window into the activities of the Council for the outside world, although some aspects of the website are reserved for the members. Non-members may communicate with the ICOYC through the page at the end of the contacts section. Reciprocity |

Cruises, Racing and other Joint events |
The Council recognizes that ultimately our common bond is on the water and encourages joint events that include other member clubs. These also further the mission of the Council and promote better awareness of yachting in other locations in the world. We therefore encourage ICOYC member clubs to invite individual members of all other ICOYC clubs to join their cruises, to develop fleet, team and match racing events between member clubs, and extend other invitations whenever possible. The Council is increasingly proactive in promoting events for individual members of ICOYC clubs, the officers of the Council supporting such opportunities whenever they can take place. There is usually some on-the-water activity at each forum, with Commodores competing against each other at various levels of competence. |

Some History In 2003 the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club , during its centennial year, hosted a Symposium attended by Flag Officers from international yacht clubs. At the symposium there was discussion about the value of such international contacts. |

| This led, in 2005, to the RVYC hosting the first Commodores’ Forum, attended by representatives of yacht clubs around the world. | Then in 2006, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club hosted the second Commodores’ Forum, attended by 28 Clubs from all five continents. At this second forum it was proposed that the International Council of Yacht Clubs should be established which, amongst other objectives, would build on the tradition of the successful conferences |

| As meetings had already been held in North America and Asia it was agreed that the III. Commodores’ Forum would be in Europe in 2007, hosted by the Societe Nautique de Marseille. Again, we had a very successful event when a wide range of issues were discussed. | |
| In October 2008 the IV. Commodores' Forum was held in Durban, South Africa, hosted by the Royal Natal Yacht Club, the oldest club in the RSA. The club's 150th anniversary celebrations were held at the same time. This was another successful Forum and participants commented that a number of important, down-to-earth topics were discussed, a key issue being how to "Weather the developing economic storm". |

V Commodores' Forum The V. Commodores' Forum will be held in Perth, Western Australia, between 10th and 14th March 2010. The host club will be the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, and the Royal Perth Yacht Club will also play an active part in the programme. The annual ICOYC Commodores' Forums are now well established in the programmes of many of the leading yacht clubs in the world. The flag officers and general managers attending the conferences have found the discussions, and the contacts they have made, to be immensely helpful in addressing both day-to-day and strategic issues. ICOYC Commodores' Cruises First Commodores' Cruise In the fall of 2008, the Commodore of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club invited members of all the Council clubs to take part in a two-week cruise along the spectacular cost of Western Canada, calling at many of RVanYC's 'outstations'. This is a great privilege. Details of this first Cruise are on the website and reports will be posted later. |
|
Second Commodores' Cruise A second such cruise is now planned for February or March 2010 based on Auckland, New Zealand, at the invitation of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Taking part in these Cruises will give members involved the unique opportunity to enjoy the best of the sailing and facilities in each area. The host clubs can contribute all their 'inside' knowledge and experience to ensure we have the best possible time. Several Council clubs are now featuring ICOYC cruises in their programmes for their members. |
