Mission and Vision

The Council’s mission is to foster closer relations between selected yacht clubs around the world in order to improve the quality of the yachting and other services they provide to their members. The Council shall also promote a proper awareness of the environment and responsibility towards it.

The Council shall operate at the level of Commodores and other present and former Flag Officers of the member clubs. It shall provide an effective platform for the exchange of ideas and experience among this group, and among General Managers.

Present Objectives of the Concil

- To build on the synergy that already exists between member clubs and develop new links by the use of contemporary communication tools and the organisation of annual forums.
- To identify areas of interest and concern among member clubs and to share information on these topics
- To foster fellowship and informal communications among member clubs by encouraging participation in joint events such as cruises, rallies, youth exchanges, interport regattas and social activities

Membership

Clubs that are admitted to membership of the Council are primarily the senior yacht clubs in the various key yachting locations. They share the finest yachting traditions and are of sufficient size, with a sufficient range of activities, to be able to contribute to the deliberations of the Council. Other yachting organisations may be admitted on an ad hoc basis if the Council can help them and vice versa.

Commodores' Forum

The centerpiece of annual activity of the Council is the Commodores’ Forum. The Forum venue is generally rotated between continents and is a prestigious event for the host yacht club. In addition the Council maintains an active e-forum on the website where members of yacht clubs in the Council can discuss a range of current issues and seek advice from peers around the world.

Website

The Council’s website is becoming the main method of communication between the member clubs, and it also provides a window into the activities of the Council for the outside world, although some aspects of the website are reserved for the members. Non-members may communicate with the ICOYC through the page at the end of the contacts section.

Reciprocity

While reciprocal arrangements between yacht clubs will always be based on individual club decisions, reciprocity among ICOYC member clubs is encouraged wherever appropriate. This is one way to foster the spirit of the Council and further its mission.

Cruises, Races, and other Events

1.jpgThe Council recognizes that ultimately our common bond is on the water and encourages joint events that include other member clubs. These also further the mission of the Council and promote better awareness of yachting in other locations in the world. We therefore encourage ICOYC member clubs to invite individual members of all other ICOYC clubs to join their cruises, to develop fleet, team and match racing events between member clubs, and extend other invitations whenever possible. The Council is increasingly proactive in promoting events for individual members of ICOYC clubs, the officers of the Council supporting such opportunities whenever they can take place. There is usually some on-the-water activity at each forum, with Commodores competing against each other at various levels of competence.
